Oscar Pea has been a photojournalist for 38 years and is the VP of Broadcasting of Tulsa’s National Association of Black Journalists.
Oscar graduated with a Mass Communication degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA in 1985.
He worked at WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge right out of college, then went to KFDA-TV in Amarillo, TX from 1986 to 1988 and came to News on 6 in Tulsa in 1988 and has covered some of the biggest stories in the state’s history, including the OKC Bombing, the resulting trials of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the Moore tornado, Hurricane Katrina and the bombing at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Even though Oscar has spent most of his career in Tulsa, KOTV has afforded Oscar to travel the world covering stories in Bosnia, London, St. Lucia, Iraq, and Amman, Jordan.
Whether telling the story of a murder victim’s parents or traveling across the globe, Oscar has always used his photography skills to tell stories that go beyond a headline and focus on telling the stories of real people, with heart, fairness, and objectivity. His photography has taken people to places they would not otherwise be able to go, to see for themselves what’s happening and how those events shape us.
His approach helped set people at ease and won him the respect of all the people he covered, no matter what their walk of life.
For 24 years, Oscar was not only sharing stories every day, but was also the Chief Photojournalist at News on 6, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the entire photo staff, managing gear, and vehicles while guiding and training photojournalists coming up through the ranks.
In 2017, Oscar was promoted again, this time to a full-time manager, overseeing all the photojournalists as well as the editors and helping run the day-to-day operations of an award-winning newsroom that employs more than 80 people.
Oscar has a great gift for really seeing people and understanding what motivates them and when they need to be pushed or encouraged and spends his days training the next generation of journalists, to make sure they are upholding the highest standards of the industry and they too, have a love for the craft and an appreciation for the responsibility the work that journalism bears.
While Oscar has accomplished much in his career, his most cherished accomplishment has been his 35-year marriage to the love of his life, Tammy, and kids Leesa and Oscar IV. Their unwavering support and his strong faith have enabled him to proudly make it through a pancreatic cancer diagnosis and celebrate being cancer free since October of 2021!
