NABJ-Tulsa, in conjunction with local sponsors and partners, is now accepting applications for the Yvonne Lewis 2024 Urban Journalism Scholarship, offering high school and college students the opportunity to compete for scholarships of up to $1,000.
Our voices and professional expertise matter
Yvonne Lewis 2024 Urban Journalism Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria for consideration:
Residency – Applicants must have permanent residence in Oklahoma.
Currently Enrolled – Applicants must be currently enrolled high school seniors or college students.
Gala Attendance – Applicants must attend or have a representative in attendance at the NABJ-Tulsa Gala.
Career Commitment – Applications must be committed to pursuing a career in the communications industry such as broadcast, print, advertising, public relations, photojournalism, graphic arts, or new media.
Fall College Enrollment – Applications must plan to be enrolled in an accredited college or university by the fall semester following the announcement of the award.
Application Process
Personal Essay – Tell us about yourself amid aspiration to pursue the field of journalism in a 500 to 1,000-word personal essay.
Headshot – Submit a headshot of yourself. It should be a high-resolution jpeg. Applications will not be judged if the photo is not included.
Writing Sample – A writing sample of 250 to 500 words such as a report on a current news event or 35 to 60 second clip on a current news event. (If you don’t have a sample, create a writing sample or clip of the same length parameters profiling a Black Wall Street entrepreneur).
Letters of Recommendation – You must also submit two (2) letters of recommendation (school, community, and/or personal).
